Thailand's Loy Krathong Festival

Loy Krathong literally means "to float a decorated basket". Loy Krathong is an annual celebration in Thailand which falls every full moon of November. The celebration takes place on the night of the full moon where people are going to make Krathongs usually out of banana stem and decorate it with orchids and scented sticks and float it on any body of water. Loy Krathong Festival is celebrated in honor of the goddess of water. Floating Krathongs in the water is an apologizing act of the bad things done to any bodies of water over the year. The act of floating Krathongs in the rivers also symbolizes the letting go of any grudges, guilt and anger from ones self. Some Thai people believe that cutting their hairs and nails and sail it away in the Krathong could help them get away from the bad things within them. And so floating a Krathong would bring good luck to the coming year.

Lighting a floating lantern in the air is also done during Loy Krathong Festival. Its symbol is very similar to floating a Krathong in the rivers.

Tomorrow is the National Loy Krathong Day Festival in Thailand. But several institutions have their own schedule for the celebration. Some celebrates it on the friday night, others on the weekends.

Thailand Celebrates Halloween Today

This photo is the event banner in one of the International Schools in Bangkok, Thailand

Halloween is celebrated in most countries in the world whether christian country or not. It is usually celebrated on the eve of October 31, night before the All Saint's Day. Halloween started way back in 500 BC with a certain ancient religion of the Celtic Tribe in Europe. During those days, Halloween was celebrated through lots of ancient rituals according to their beliefs.

Thailand is a Buddhist country but it is so much influenced by the Christian traditions because there are a number of foreigners bringing in their cultures to Thailand and Thai people embraces those cultures and happily adapted it.

Today, Halloween Festival is a fun festival especially for kids. People can dress up like ghosts, monsters and witches. They can also wear masks and put on make ups to mimic evil appearance. The most highlighted activity in this festival is the "Trick and Treat" where people would go house to house in a village, knock the door and trick the kids with their costumes and plays, then they would give something to the kids like sweets, apples, chocolates and jelly ace.

Some other notable activities are costume party, bonfire, creating haunted houses to visit, and viewing horror movies.

OFW's in Thailand On the Move Against Low Salary

OFW's in Thailand On the Move Against Low Salary
written by an OFW

I wrote this blog because recently, I've read online posts of OFW's complaining about salaries saying: they should earn high salaries because they are better than farangs, farangs are only backpackers who come to teach in Thailand, etc. Posts further say that job posters with low salaries shouldn't be allowed, telling Pinoys not to accept low salaries, campaigns against low-paying agencies and etc. Another thing that moved me is that, from various posts I read, most of the posts and comments were "wrong grammar". Well, I don't say I am perfect in my grammar because I am not. What I want to emphasize in this blog is reality.

Let me site some points about truth.

1. Not all Farangs are backpackers. Not all Pinoys are good.

Not all NES are backpackers. We can find very excellent NES teachers in International Schools. IS don't hire backpackers of course. And IS only hire specialized teachers. Meaning, subject teachers must be degree holders of the subject they are teaching. Where can we find backpackers? They are in the government schools and mostly in provinces. Yeah I believe degree holder NES's don't actually accept salary offers from government schools, maybe not all. Not all Pinoys are good. True. We must accept the fact that not all of us are good (in speaking English) even if we finished education degree. Similarly, we can find well-versed, specialized Pinoys in International Schools too(also in government schools). I know a Filipino who is teaching Biology in an International School and he is getting big salary. He has PhD units. Not only him, there are also other excellent Filipinos who are in other IS's. And I know Filipinos who are not degree holders teaching in the government schools. (Equivalent to backpackers am I right?) Not to mention those who earned their degrees from Recto.  There are also non-Ed grads who can teach better than Ed grads. There are nurses, AB's, accountants, engineers, IT grads who are better teachers than real teachers too. I am not attacking my race here, I just want to show them the truth.

2. Racial Discrimination

If we feel like we are discriminated because we are Pinoys, that's normal and that's not supposed to be because we are Pinoys but because we are Asians. Racial discrimination existed long time ago and I don't wanna discuss about it anymore because we already know how great its effect is. In fact, there is already a law against racism in most countries. Sad truth here in Thailand is because we are not discriminated by Caucasians but by our co-Asians. The parents only wanted their children to have NES teachers because they wanted them to speak near-native English. So the school would look for Farangs because of parents' demands. Sometimes parents even think all white skinned are Native speakers. Can we blame them?

3. The Salary

Lately, I saw many posts complaining that Pinoy salary is very low. It is because we accepted the job with that salary that's why we are getting only that much. Funny right? Why complain? If we don't like the salary we can find other options. If there's no other choice but to accept 13K, then don't complain because it is our choice. But what's more funny here is that, we don't complain about our own salary, it's the other Pinoys who complain about our salary. Lol. They blame us for accepting 13K. It's so ironic. They even fight against those who are posting jobs with low salaries. Literally fight and say bold words against low salary job posters. Is it proper?

Just some info, if NES gets the average of 100K salary in International Schools, NES in government schools get only around 35K and around 40K in Bilingual and Private Schools.  Pinoys in International Schools get more or less 50K, average of 25K in some government schools and the rest gets 20K below.

So wherever we go, we are always lower than Farangs and that's reality that we need to accept. Reason goes back to the economic status of our beloved country PI.

4. Pinoy Attitude

On the dark side, Pinoys are known to be arrogant, loud and proud. On the bright side (para patas), Pinoys are hard-working and hospitable. Of course, sikat tayo jan.

We are arrogant, loud and proud because we can't face situations peacefully. We always fight against people. Even our own people. Wherever we are, whether in our own country or abroad, we always fight. Maybe even within our own homes, lol. Look at how Pinoys react in every post there is in social media Groups and Forums, isn't it true that every post would really result to kapwa pinoys fighting? Isn't it true that comments are always out of the topic which would result to misunderstanding, disagreement and personal insult? Things to ponder upon huh?

Another one very famous Pinoy attitude is crab mentality. We like to put others down because we think we are better than them. We do this not only to our kapwa pinoys but unknowingly to NES's also. When we say they are only backpackers and we are better than them, that is one clear way of trying to put them down. Are we good enough to do that? Some of those Pinoys who are sitting in school offices are sometimes the ones pulling co-pinoys down. In order to put ourselves up, we take advantage of our co-pinoys. How about those Pinoys who keep on posting in FB discriminating kapwa pinoys and other races but wrong grammar naman ang post nya? If someone will post, kokontra ang isa, co-comment ang marami at mauuwi sa pagtatalo. And how about those who are pinoy scammers who victimized kapwa pinoys?

We can't blame ourselves why we are like these, can we? These attitudes rooted from our forefathers and these would be very difficult to change, unless we'll put a lot of efforts to start within ourselves.

And we don't expect a UP Summa Cum Laude to end up working here.

Okay, why do we say we are better than them? Is it because they are only backpackers? Maybe we forgot the fact that even though they are only backpackers, they still speak good English. Look at how we speak English.(of course not all of us) Viri hivi aksent. And viri wrong grammer. We can't even speak English randomly and simultaneously.

Maybe we think we are good because we are teaching zero-English kids and we are with those local teachers who can't speak English. Of course we are far better compared to them. We are only good in front of them? Hehehe... And we believe we are the best because our Thai Director gave us perfect evaluation score even though he can not read, speak and understand English. Can we still boast if we are surrounded by NES people? Can we speak straight English with correct subject-verb agreement in front of these people? Hahaha...

Why can't we speak fluent English is because we don't practice it every day. We don't use it at our regular conversations with Pinoy friends. They even complain because we are so loud in the English Department and we speak Tagalog all day even in their (non-pinoys) presence which I agree is impolite. Same is true among Cebuanos, you'll be humiliated if you speak Tagalog within the group. So how can we improve kung palaging ganito ang ugali natin?

If we are to evaluate government schools having English Teachers for 5 years. Let's see how the students are doing. Can they speak straight English? What do we expect from them after 5 years? How much the students have learned within that span of years directly reflects on how much the teachers have taught them. If you are the teacher, did you meet your learning expectations? Did you meet it within the time frame? How did you assess them? What did you do to when they failed. Ask yourselves.

Teaching is not only about evaluations and pay days. The greatest joy of being a teacher is when you see that your students are learning from you. When you see that you have done your best and your best was good enough.

I don't forget about us being hard working people. And that's what NES people like about our skilled workers in Canada and America and even in the Mid East. We are "all-around" people. We can do any job so long as we earn (and send money back home for our families). We (whether degree holders or not) can be domestic helpers, chefs, singers, construction workers, truck drivers, housekeepers and everything else. We are helpful and we are very talented especially in  making crafts and visual aids and of course we are happy people. We are very talented in Basketball and in Music. These are the fields where we excel.

But here in Thailand, our job is to teach English conversation. We are in the competition against people who speak native English, and we are not so good at that compared to them (NES) because it is their first language. And so what are we fighting for here? We want above 20K salary for every Filipino? How can we materialize this? I think huh, this would be a big task to do. This can't be achieved unless PM would make it a law. Lol...

Am I discouraging people in pursuing the move? No, I am just laying out the truth.

Number 1 truth why Pinoys accept below 15K salary is that, it is so much better than nothing. And that is true. That is reality. Even Engineers (one of the highest-paid occupations in PI) come here and landed in 15K. Why? Because they think and they know for sure that it is better compared home. What about teachers in PI. Even principals in PI gov't. schools left their positions only to come here ending up to 17K. And how much more for nurses who are working in Call Centers. Nurse nag call center? They still chose to come here and chose to receive that salary rates. (don't get mad at me for exposing this because the whole world already knew about the PI economic status)

So alin ba ang mas mabuti?

So tinanggap ko yon pero at the same time naghahanap pa din ako ng mas malaki. That was six years ago.

My write up is getting long and the ideas are getting messy. Hahaha...We can aim for greater things and we can make it without taking advantage from other people. In this sinful world we are living in, it would be very difficult to change other people's attitudes. Best thing to do is to look at our own selves and see whether we have done our best for the Lord. Because no matter what happens, we still believe that God is our ultimate Helper. Let's go back to our own shells and ponder upon: Is God happy with what I'm doing today?

How to Avoid Being Offloaded from Philippine Immigration

You want to come to Thailand but you are afraid being OFFLOADed from the immigration in NAIA? Well, you are not alone. Many of us have been exploited and abused by these immigration officers who think they are just doing their jobs and who think they are protecting us against HUMAN TRAFFICKING.

Truth:

Every Filipino has the RIGHT TO TRAVEL. The 1987 Philippine Constitution Article III Section 6 states that the right to travel should not be impaired except in the interest of national security, public safety or public health.

So when do we think our right to travel was deprived? Was it when we get offloaded without valid reason? In this case, the denial of our right to travel to Thailand is a clear violation of constitutional right.

The real scenario why random travelers get offloaded is that, in the airport, officers roam around to look for possible victims of human trafficking, or their offload victim actually. How do they choose whom to offload? When they think you'll go out as tourist to other countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand but you're gonna find a job there. When they can see you are innocent-looking. And, just randomly, when they feel like they want to offload you. In short, you'll become their prospect or suspect???. After that, they will tap the officers about you so that when it is your turn in the immigration line, you'll be interrogated. So if you are the lucky chosen passenger, good luck to your interview.

According to the anti human trafficking act, all tourist travelers must undergo primary inspection and secondary inspection when needed. In the immigration line, as a tourist, you're supposed to know that you need to show your passport, return ticket and visa. But since you are travelling to Thailand, you don't need visa at all. So basically, you only need to show your passport and the return ticket. That complies the primary inspection mentioned above. In the event that the immigration officer subjects you for secondary inspection, you'll be asked to go to their office, they will interview you, and ask you questions like how old are you, what degree you finished in college, what is your current work, what are you gonna do there, do you have sufficient travel funds or your financial capability and if not, do you have immediate family there who can shoulder your stay, any document from your immediate family duly stamped by the Philippine Embassy, and etc.

If you are chosen for interview and you failed to provide them the information they needed, they have the right to deny your travel. This is what is supposed to happen every time they offload passengers.

Let's see some of the reasons why travelers get offloaded especially those who are travelling to Thailand.

1. If you're a first time traveler and you looked rugged, nervous and innocent, you have the high possibility to be offloaded.

2. If you are not consistent with your answer. When they first ask you the question and this is your answer, make sure your answer is the same the next time they ask you same rephrased question.

3. If you have previously stayed in Thailand for more than 1 year as a tourist (meaning you may have worked but have not obtained work permit), you have higher chance of being offloaded.

4. It is a fact that you come to Thailand to look for a job and the immigration officers already knew about that, I mean they already knew that most tourists come to Thailand to look for a job. So they would ask you what are you gonna do there, and you would tell them the truth, they would absolutely offload you.

Here are some useful tips on how to avoid being offloaded. Tips on how to pass immigration lines smoothly: Remember that they want you to protect from HUMAN TRAFFICKING.

1. Present your passport and return ticket properly. Greet the officer and wear a smile. Appear like you are a professional traveler. Show your confidence.

2. Dress like an executive. A cousin was coming here in Thailand for the first time. She came because there was a work position waiting for her. In Thailand, you come as a tourist, you apply for work, and your employer will process you working visa here. So she came as a tourist. She was hesitant at first because she's scared of being offloaded. We told her not to worry, just dress nicely and answer the questions with a smiling face. When we fetched her at the airport, she came wearing mini-dress and heels. She said she was only asked very few questions maybe 1 or 2 then she was cleared.

3. Bring only 1 hand-carry bag. Don't bring too many things on your hands when you queue up in the immigration line. Travel lightly and easily. If possible, bring only a small, presentable hand bag or shoulder bag.

4. Never tell them you are going to look for a job in Thailand. Even though it is the truth, they want you to tell them lies. Tell them you are going for a short trip only. You may tell them you are visiting your cousin, your sweetheart or you are only going to shop cheap items in Thailand.

5. If you want to tell them you have friends or relatives here in Thailand, make sure you have their documents ready. The officers will definitely ask for an invitation letter from them together with copies of their passports and work permits.

6. If you are not telling them you have friends and relatives to stay with, make sure you can show them your hotel accommodation and your financial capacity to cover up your travel expenses.

7. Above all, pray to God for a safe and smooth travel.

For OFW balik-manggagawa, here are the things you need to secure upon coming back to Thailand.

1. Passport with valid VISA
2. Air Ticket
3. OEC issued by POEA

Having all those 3 items above, your travel back to Thailand will be smooth.

How to secure OEC? If you are staying 1-5 days in Philippines for a short vacation or emergency leave, you can secure OEC from the airport. But if you are staying more than 5 days, you are required to file from your Local/Regional POEA Offices. Before OEC is issued in POEA offices, you are required to pay for your OWWA Membership, Philhealth Premium and Pag-Ibig. In case you are travelling twice in 1 year and you already have paid those premiums on your first travel, then you only need to pay for your OEC. Say for example, you usually go back on summers. So you paid everything on May that year including OWWA, Philhealth, Pag-ibig and OEC before coming back to Thailand. Then you went back again in December, your OWWA, Pag-ibig and Philhealth are still valid until May next year, so you only have to pay for OEC which is 100 Pesos.

OFW Dependents

How about for OFW dependents, are they going to undergo same process as tourists? Who are considered as OFW dependents? OFW dependents are the children, spouse, or parents of an OFW.

In order to have smooth travels for OFW dependents, they must have all relevant documents showing evidences that they are real dependents. Some documents required are birth certificates for children and parents, marriage contract for spouses. OFW documents needed are copies of the OFW passport and work permits, work contract and latest OEC. Having all these OFW documents validated with Red Ribbon from Phil.Embassy Bangkok is an advantage but not required.

Note: The contents stated above is purely for your information only. Passing through the immigration smoothly is a case to case basis so it is not advisable to exclusively rely on this information.

TEACH IN THAILAND

Thailand is a nice place to stay for tourists and job-seekers. Here are some of the questions you might want to ask when you want to visit and teach in Thailand:

VISA APPLICATION

Thailand does not require any visa for Filipino visitors and they are given a 30-day stay inside the kingdom upon arrival. On or before the 30-day expires, the visitor must leave the country.

WHAT IF I WANT TO STAY LONGER THAN 30 DAYS?

There are many options you can do to extend your stay. You can extend your 30-day permit to another 30 days at the Immigration Office at ChaengWattana Government Complex. You can get a TRANSIT VISA from Cambodia which is only 4 hours away from Bangkok and which will cost you around 700 baht only. That will extend your stay in Thailand for 15 days. If you still want to stay longer after that 15 days you can go back to the border (Cambodia) and get another 15 days extension again and you can do it limited to 2 times and the next next thing you can do is go to Laos and get a 3 months tourist visa.

HOW ABOUT TOURIST VISA?

If your first 30 days is almost over and you still want to stay, you can get a TOURIST VISA in Laos. Cambodia does not issue Tourist Visa only Laos. It takes 10 hours to go there, then you have to stay overnight because the issuance of visa will take 1 working day. The cost of the visa alone is a thousand baht. So including your fare and meals and hotel, you may need 3 thousand. Tourist visa gives you 60 days to stay in the kingdom.

WHERE COULD I POSSIBLY STAY WHILE LOOKING FOR JOB?

If you have friends in Thailand, you can stay with them for a while. You can also rent apartments which are very cheap and affordable. But if you find the job already, you can move to the place nearer to your school.

WHO ARE QUALIFIED TO TEACH?

Every professional can come and try their luck in teaching Thai Government Schools. While some schools accept any degree, most of the schools at present only hires Education Degree holders.

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR TEACHING JOBS IN THAI SCHOOLS?

Once you come to Thailand, you can immediately start your journey of applying. Many schools nowadays are under agencies so you can not just walk-in to any schools you see along the way. What you can do is find teaching agencies and apply there and they will be the once to place you to any schools under them.

WHAT ARE THE AGENCIES I CAN APPLY TO?

Some of the famous teaching agencies are listed below. Many of them places teachers within Bangkok only, but some places teacher in the province also.

2. EMS
3. SIAM Computer and Language
4. ECC

7. ILIT
8. Nature Method

These 7 areas are (a) in front of MBK shopping mall, (b) Asoke Intersection, (c) Silom (d) Victory Monument, (e) Ladprao Intersection (f) In front of DSI Chaeng Wattana and (g) Lumpini Park. These 7 different areas are now super crowded with different stages set up for the leaders to speak.

Anti-government protesters aimed to have victory by giving an ultimatum to PM Yingluck to step down by Wednesday or else they will shutdown Bangkok for a longer period.

Foreigners are advised to avoid rally sites because danger is unpredictable as what has happened in previous demonstrations. Foreigners are also advised not to wear either yellow or red shirts and not to demonstrate any sign of favor to either party. Remain neutral at all times and to always be cautious.
